11R is pleased to present Aiko Hachisuka, Tschabalala Self, Caroline Wells Chandler, a three-person exhibition featuring artists who consider ideas latent in bodily reference, either through direct imagery or material suggestion. The show is on view from September 7 – October 9, 2016 in 11R’s West Gallery. 

Aiko Hachisuka will present a new large-scale wall-hanging piece, mounting a sculptural collage of silkscreened clothes on gessoed canvas. Like her freestanding pieces, Hachisuka’s work references early John Chamberlain foam sculptures as well as soft sculpture by Yayoi Kusama. Tschabalala Self’s paintings, which incorporate fabric collage and mixed media, including fabric and synthetic hair, identify contemporary cultural fantasies surrounding the black female body and address their implications. Caroline Wells Chandler crochets figures - trolls, athletes, and other characters - who populate a queer world, defined by the artist as one in which the individuals have non-normative relationships to gender, the body, and sexuality; they reveal surgery scars and pose affirmatively against the gallery walls.

Tschabalala Self received her MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2015 and lives and works in New Haven, CT. Selected solo and group exhibitions include Thierry Goldberg Gallery, New York; Kate Werble Gallery, New York; Roberts & Tilton, Los Angeles; Maccarone, New York; and The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York.

Aiko Hachisuka was born in Nagoya, Japan and received her MFA from CalArts and lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. Selected solo and group exhibitions include 11R, New York; Brennan & Griffin, New York; D’Amelio Terras, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles.

Caroline Wells Chandler received her MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2011. Selected solo and group exhibitions Roberto Paradise, San Juan, Puerto Rico; Field Projects, New York; and Brand New Gallery; Milan. She currently lives and works in New York.
