Van Doren Waxter is pleased to present Other Night Other Light, an exhibition of recent watercolor and Sumi ink works on paper by Eva Lundsager, opening July 13 and on view through August 26, 2016. The 20 works on paper exist in an ambiguous state between representational and abstract landscapes, eluding categorization and engaging a world in flux. An interview with Associate Director Paul Brainard and the artist will accompany the e-catalogue.

Completed in 2015-16, the works on view approach an idea of classic landscape but remain in denial of that reference point through multiple disorienting horizon lines and enigmatic forms. Kinetic, possibly violent motion is arrested within their confines: glowing orbs expand, explode and collapse in on themselves, suggesting atmospheric changes or cosmic reactions. The attendant tension, augmented by spontaneous drips and splashes and a soft palette of foggy blues and pale yellows, highlight the divide between human understanding and the boundless chaos of the natural world.

Taken as variations on a single vision, each permutation hints at a concealed truth about to be revealed. They suggest an essential quality of the interior life, and the psychological necessity of compartmentalizing worldly anxieties. As in the artist’s previous work, which conjured phantasmagoric visions located between the natural and subconscious worlds, Other Night Other Light operates in a liminal space of abstraction and figuration, a quality that has been explored in the work of contemporaries such as Amy Sillman and Cecily Brown.

Eva Lundsager (b. 1960) received a BA in Fine Art from the University of Maryland and attended the MFA program at Hunter College in New York, which she completed while working at the Gracie Mansion Gallery in the East Village. After sixteen years in New York, she spent a decade in Saint Louis, Missouri. Since 2012 Lundsager has lived and worked in Boston.

A recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship in painting, Lundsager has exhibited her art for more than two decades, including multiple solo shows in New York at the Greenberg Van Doren and Jack Tilton galleries.
