    September 9 – October 9, 2015 | 11 Rivington St, NY Assume Vivid Astro Focus | Shirley Jaffe | Denise Kupferschmidt 11R Eleven Rivington presents the final exhibition at our 11 Rivington Street location: Assume Vivid Astro Focus, Denise Kupferschmidt, and Shirley Jaffe is on view from September 9 – September 9, 2015. The show features painting, sculpture, works on paper, and separate site- specific wallworks by Assume Vivid Astro Focus and Kupferschmidt. The show spotlights the distinctive pictorial language of Shirley Jaffe (born 1923), an American expatriate artist who has been living in Paris since 1949, and has forged her own distinctive vocabulary of dynamic geometry. The works included in the exhibition engage in a playful conversation about shape, color and active forms.

     

    The collective Assume Vivid Astro Focus (AVAF) was formed in New York City in 2001 and has exhibited internationally since then. Its principal members are Eli Sudbrack (born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1968; currently lives in NY) and Christophe Hamaide-Pierson (born in Paris, France in 1973; currently lives in Paris). The collective has received awards from the Rema Hort Mann Foundation and the Public Art Fund. AVAF’s work has appeared at New Museum; National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo; São Paulo Bienal; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; MOCA LA; Indianapolis Museum of Art; Tate Liverpool; and the 2004 Whitney Biennial, among many others.

     

    Denise Kupferschmidt was born 1979 in Princeton, NJ and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at Nicole Klagsbrun, NY; Tracey Williams, NY; and Fox Production, NY; and in Brooklyn at BAM and Southfirst Gallery. Recent solos include Halsey McKay Gallery, East Hampton and Cooper Cole, Toronto. She has published zines with Nieves Books, Museums Press and The Holster. Kupferschmidt has been included in Modern Painters 100 Artists to Watch and was a 2010 NADA Emerging Artist honoree. Kupferschmidt studied at Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, and shows with Halsey McKay Gallery in East Hampton, New York.

     

    Shirley Jaffe was born in 1923 and educated at Cooper Union, NY and Phillips Gallery School of Art, Washington, DC; Jaffe currently lives and works in Paris, France. Her work has been widely show and exhibited internationally beginning in 1951. Jaffe is represented by Tibor de Nagy Gallery, NY; Galerie Nathalie Obadia, Paris and Brussels; and Galerie Greta Meert, Brussels. Her work is in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, NY; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and Musee d’Art Moderne de la Ville, Paris, among others
