    AIKO HACHISUKA April 12 – May 17, 2015 | 195 Chrystie St, NY

Eleven Rivington is delighted to present Aiko Hachisuka’s second solo show with the gallery, on view from April 12 –May 17, 2015, at 195 Chrystie Street. The exhibition will present recent, cylindrically shaped, abstract sculptures and a series of new unique works on paper.

Aiko Hachisuka has developed her distinctive soft sculptures – made with found clothing and silkscreened in varying colors – most noticeably by experimenting with height. The variety of size invites disparate readings, evoking architecture, the figure, and the vessel. The primary structure in each new sculpture is a cylinder-like column with a clear delineation between an abstract mass, on top, and a base. The lower portion of each work is exposed at the bottom, leaving a dynamic line created by the edges of the clothing that previously would have been tucked under and inside of each interior chamber. The underlying structure plays a more active role in the new work, becoming a ground for the clothing elements to be built onto and also acting as a backdrop for the elements that float in space. In addition to height and structure, Hachisuka also varies her use of standard platforms and sculpture bases. Several freestanding pieces stand in the same space as the viewer; here, the exposed under-structure serves as the pedestal, while the pieces that sit on pedestals relate differently to the floor. Hachisuka’s play on the ideas of top and bottom extends to her new monotypes, made from imprints of clothing and chromatically bisected into sections.

Aiko Hachisuka was born in 1974 in Nagoya, Japan, and was educated at CalArts, CA (MFA) and The Ringling School of Art & Design, FL (BFA). Solo and group exhibitions include Eleven Rivington, NY; 7 Sculptors at Brennan & Griffin, NY; Tables & Chairs at D’Amelio Terras, NY; Core 2002 at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and Snapshot: New Art from Los Angeles at the Hammer Museum, LA (traveled to Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami). Hachisuka’s work has been featured in the New York Times, Frieze, Flash Art, TAR, and LA Weekly, among others. Her work is included in The Rachofsky Collection and The Francis J. Greenburger Collection, among others. The artist lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
