Alexander Gorlizki

Van Doren Waxter is pleased to present a special exhibition of works on paper by Alexander Gorlizki on view March 13 - March 28, 2015; opening reception on Friday, March 13 from 6-9PM. Gorlizki’s works on paper combine diverse elements including hand-painted figures, ornamental and textile patterns and photographs and magazine pages. His compositions range from geometric abstraction to loosely narrative surreal scenes offering views into layered worlds where Eastern and Western iconography and historical references are re-contextualized and comingle in a contemporary and flattened visual space. Gorlizki's interest in uniting elements from Eastern and Western cultures presents itself as much in the process of making his work as it does in the visual language of each piece. For nearly two decades, Gorlizki has collaborated with a wide range of artisans and craftspeople specializing in highly skilled, traditional techniques; the most long-standing of these creative relationships is with Riyaz Uddin, a master miniaturist painter in Jaipur, India, with whom Gorlizki established an atelier in 1996. Alexander Gorlizki was born in London in 1967 and received his MFA from the Slade School, London. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Gorlizki’s work is included in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum, London; the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto; the Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf and the Denver Art Museum, Denver. The exhibition will be presented in Van Doren Waxter’s Viewing Room concurrent with There’s Always Tomorrow, a solo exhibition of paintings by Joe Goode in the main gallery.
