Adam Shecter: Last Men

Eleven Rivington is pleased to present a solo exhibition by the New York artist Adam Shecter, on view from May 21 – July 1. This is the artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery and will feature a new video animation titled Last Men. A limited edition artist book will accompany the video installation.

Inspired by the science fiction novel Last and First Men by Olaf Stapledon, Last Men imagines planet earth and its human civilization in the far distant future via a series of both lucid vignettes and decayed visual transmissions. Using a variety of techniques—from intimate hand-drawing to heavily processed digital footage, the narrative of Last Men meanders between the subatomic and the cosmological, ultimately espousing a tale of humanity and its destiny in Shecter's phantasmagorical method of storytelling.

A new limited-edition artist book will accompany the projection. Also titled Last Men, the book—a highly persuasive pastiche of a sci-fi trade paperback—will expand the narrative of the projected animation using drawings, photographs and texts, with a portion of the material contributed by members of Shecter’s artist collective, 2-UP.

Adam Shecter was born in Dallas, TX in 1976 and currently lives and works in New York, NY. Shecter attended The Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2006.  He has had solo exhibitions and projects at Bielefelder Kunstverein, Germany, and Konstföreningen Aura, Sweden and has participated in group exhibitions and projects at BAMCinematek, A Public Space, MOMA PS1, The Dependant Art Fair, Overgaden Institute of Contemporary Art, Sara Meltzer Gallery, John Connelly Presents, Deitch Projects, and Printed Matter, Inc. Shecter is cofounder of the artist collective 2-UP, and maintains an online test site at http://www.theworldofadam.com.
