TM Davy

Eleven Rivington is pleased to present the solo gallery debut of American artist TM Davy, on view from September 12 – October 17, 2010.  The exhibition features autobiographical paintings and collages whose primary subject is the artist’s day-to-day life with his partner Liam, including portraits, domestic scenes, and still life and garden paintings.

TM Davy’s depictions of himself and Liam are observed from life, portraying the private and physical intimacy of a couple.  The relationship between the artist and his subject allows for a closeness and understanding of the trust, confidence, and feeling between two people, depicted in works that range from quick, sketchy collages, to more studied and fully rendered scenes that are classically virtuosic.  Davy’s images are depicted with an emphatic conveyance of mood through a variety of means, which includes the occasional use of bed linens, washcloths and personal artifacts.  This formal experimentation adds animated tension, subtly enlivening the painterly traditions that are perhaps more immediately apparent in the work.  This, along with the unambiguous and autobiographical nature of the work, contributes to the ongoing discourse about figuration in contemporary painting, albeit with representations that are at once playful, tender and deeply felt.

TM Davy was born 1980 in NY and was educated at the School of Visual Arts.  His group exhibitions include No Soul for Sale at Tate Modern, London; Sur le Dandysme Aujourd’hui at Centro Galego de Arte Contemporanea, Spain; Nudes at Galeria Fortes Vilaca, SP, Brazil; Le Petit Mort de Ete at Klaus von Nichtssagend, Brooklyn; and Trifecta and Idols of Perversity, both at Bellwether Gallery, NY.
