    Reception, May 24, 6-8 PM

Greenberg Van Doren Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new medium and large-scale paintings by Eva Lundsager. This is the artist's first solo exhibition in New York in 9 years and her first with the gallery. The show, titled Wherever, is on view from May 24 through July 7, 2006. Lundsager is a recent recipient of a Penny McCall Foundation Grant and a Guggenheim Fellowship in painting.

A painter who has been committed to abstraction for more than two decades, Lundsager continues to mine the rich territory between landscape and abstraction, finding inspiration in the mysticism of Charles Burchfield's landscapes and the atmospheric skies of Edvard Munch, among other sources. In her vigorously painted canvases, fields and stripes of gradated color stumble forth with tumbleweeds of line and texture. In Radiating People Trees, 2006, repeated and undulating lines provide movement and rhythm to the lower portion of the picture, while in another painting, Merry Munk, 2005, a red sky alludes to the apocalyptic landscape backgrounds of Munch.

Lundsager works intuitively: her painting is a vehicle for making interior life visible. Entering her paintings, one encounters a physical process that transforms and builds richness out of itself. Besides being striking visual events, her paintings pose important questions about the nature of abstraction and painting in general. In her new works, Lundsager dwells completely in a painting universe of irreproducible events and gestures where one finds much possibility for joy and redemption in painting.

Eva Lundsager was born 1960 in Buffalo, NY and currently lives and works in St. Louis, MO. She received her B.A. from the University of Maryland and an M.F.A. from Hunter College, NY. Lundsager has exhibited widely in the past 15 years, including Jack Tilton Gallery, NY; Whanki Museum, Seoul; Schmidt Contemporary, St. Louis, the Kemper Art Museum, St. Louis, Geoffrey Young Gallery, Great Barrington, MA; and Thomas Von Lintel Gallery, Munich, Germany.
