Edward Lipski

Solo exhibition

Greenberg Van Doren Gallery is pleased to present the NY debut solo exhibition of British sculptor Edward Lipski. The show will be on view March 24 – April 30, 2005. An illustrated color brochure with an essay by Brian Sholis will accompany the exhibition.

The exhibition will feature eight meticulously crafted medium to large scale sculptures and objects created in the past three years, including the tour-de-force Showgirl, a life size Las Vegas dancer with a plumed head whose entire body is ‘skinned’ with jet-black sequins. It’s an example of how the Lipski dramatically employs fur, synthetic rubber, precious metals, and other media to produce ‘hybrids’ of startling presence. In his essay for the exhibition, Brian Sholis writes:

Figures are marked by excessive tattoos or are wrapped in materials suggestive of deviant subcultures. Each of Lipski’s sculptures possesses an ambiguity derived from his pairing of opposites—repulsive form and seductive surface, sexuality and innocence, recognition and disassociation. They defy easy interpretation. Lipski’s creatures literally or metaphorically turn in on themselves, refusing to disclose easy answers about why they are there or how they got to be that way.

Edward Lipski was born 1966 in London, where he currently lives and works. He studied at the Chelsea College of Art and Design, London, receiving a B.A. and an M.A. Lipski solo exhibitions include Van Laere Contemporary Art, Antwerp; Alan Koppel, Chicago; Marella Arte Contemporanea, Milan; and Entwistle Gallery, London.
