Suzanne Caporael: Reading Time

Solo exhibition

Greenberg Van Doren Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by Suzanne Caporael. The exhibition will be on view January 6 – February 12, 2005. This is the artist’s second exhibition with the gallery. A fully illustrated color catalogue will accompany the exhibition.

Since Caporael’s last exhibition of landscape inspired abstractions (in January 2003), the artist has broadened the range and breadth of her subject matter and inspiration. Her new work tackles a wide spectrum of genres, from still life and landscape to figuration, all filtered or veiled in varying degrees of abstraction. The work titled 431 (single tree with white trunk) is conveyed by a composition of vivid brushstrokes suggesting branches and foliage. Similarly, the painting 452 (snowing) is a lyrical abstraction of grey and white patches, as if in a storm flurry. Caporael is able to convey a sense of time and place – and in the figures a sense of personality and memory – while depicting her subject matter with simple and condensed forms. What is pictured is a poetic understanding of the language of painting, a trove of knowledge and experience conveyed with an economy of means.

Suzanne Caporael was born in 1949 in Brooklyn, NY, and currently lives and works in Stone Ridge, NY. She has exhibited widely in galleries and museums nationwide and her work is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among many others.
