OverviewArtemis • Greenberg Van Doren • Fine Art is pleased to present an exhibition of figurative drawings, gouaches, and paintings by Richard Diebenkorn (1922 – 1993), on view from April 25 through June 7, 2002. Organized in association with Galleria Lawrence Rubin, Milan, this exhibition will feature forty-four representational works from the Estate of Richard Diebenkorn.
The exhibition will cover the artist’s innovative middle years from the late 1950s through mid 1960s, the period between his celebrated early Berkeley abstractions and the Ocean Park series. During this phase of Diebenkorn’s career, he turned against the prevailing tide of abstract expressionism and returned to the possibilities of representational figure painting. During this period, he worked directly from a live model and painted still lifes and landscapes. All of these genres will be represented in the exhibition, including drawings in crayon and ink wash, gouaches, and oil paintings on canvas and wood panel. Paintings such as Woman with Newspaper, 1960, and Untitled (Seated Woman in Striped Chair), 1965 – both featured in the exhibition – masterfully explore the intricate interplay between formal rigor, studied observation, and sensual color.
Richard Diebenkorn: Figurative Drawings, Gouaches, and Paintings’ will be accompanied by a full-color catalogue. -
