Lawrence Rubin Greenberg Van Doren Fine Art is pleased to present an exhibition of late works by Roy Lichtenstein from April 21 through June 5, 1999. This is the first New York gallery exhibition of works by the artist since his death in the fall of 1997. The exhibition will include four large paintings from the artist’s last series entitled “Interiors with Still Life (virtual)” as well as drawings, prints, and collages.

Roy Lichtenstein (1923 – 1997) was one of the leaders of the Pop art movement of the 1960s and became one of the most important and influential artists of the late 20th century. Lichtenstein’s signature style of bold black outlines, ben-day dots, and bright primary colors was borrowed from comic strips and newspaper printing techniques. His large scale renditions of comic book panels, consumer product advertisements, and domestic settings created a visual vocabulary which merged popular imagery and “high” art.

In 1998, the Beyeler Foundation in Switzerland presented a survey of the artist’s work that spanned the course of his career. This exhibition followed several acclaimed museum and international exhibitions: Future, Present, Past at the 1997 Venice Biennale, Italy; The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein at the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; and the artist’s retrospective Roy Lichtenstein, organized by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NY, (traveled to The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, Haus der Kunst, Munich, and the Wexner Center for the Arts, OH, among others).

Lawrence Rubin Greenberg Van Doren Fine Art is located at 730 5th Avenue at 57th Street. The gallery is open from Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, or by appointment. Please contact the gallery at 212.445.0444 for further information.
